Townsville has significant connections to Papua New Guinea. It is the most northerly port in Australia with a direct shipping service to Papua New Guinea and it has twice weekly flight connections by Air Niugini. There are many businesses in Townsville with interests in Papua New Guinea, including in the mining services sector. James Cook University has strong connections with Papua New Guinea, and many Papua New Guinea students study there. There is a large Papua New Guinea diaspora in Townsville. Organisations like YWAM Medical Ships and the Australian Defence Force provide additional connections into Papua New Guinea. The cities of Townsville and Port Moresby have a Sister City relationship.

There is renewed interest in the Townsville business community in doing business in Papua New Guinea especially now that the direct flight service makes travel more straightforward.

The Business Update will take place over an extended lunchtime (1 p.m. to about 3 p.m.) on Friday 15 June 2018 with four speakers discussing key issues and opportunities in Papua New Guinea. The 1 p.m. commencement allows passengers travelling from Port Moresby that day to travel on the Air Niugini flight that morning arriving at 11.25 a.m.

The Papua New Guinea Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, the Hon Charles Abel MP, has accepted the Council’s invitation to be the keynote speaker at the PNG Business Update. Other speakers will represent Westpac PNG, the Papua New Guinea Chamber of Mines and Petroleum, and the Townsville based Pacific Islands International.

YWAM Medical Ships will be holding a Breakfast by the Sea event in the morning of Friday 15 June. Bookings can be made at https://ywamships.org.au/bbts/.
