Australia is reinforcing its commitment to Papua New Guinea’s economic development through a AUD95.7 million loan to upgrade Kimbe Port in West New Britain Province. This funding, provided under the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP), is part of a broader AUD621.4 million initiative aimed at modernising ports across PNG to strengthen economic resilience and regional connectivity.
The Kimbe Port upgrade is the first of five major projects under this initiative, with subsequent improvements planned for Oro Bay, Daru, the Lae Tidal Basin, and Kavieng. These upgrades are designed to enhance infrastructure reliability, improve supply chain efficiency, and create economic opportunities for local communities.
PNG Ports Corporation Ltd. has awarded the contract for the Kimbe Port works to Pacific Marine Group Pty Ltd., a proud and valued member of the Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council. As a leading marine contractor with extensive experience in the Pacific region, Pacific Marine Group is well-positioned to deliver critical infrastructure upgrades that will bolster Papua New Guinea’s maritime trade and economic growth.
Construction is set to commence in early 2025, with completion expected by 2026. The project will focus on strengthening the port’s resilience against climate-related impacts and improving freight services. Notably, the Kimbe Port upgrade alone is expected to generate up to 300 local jobs during construction by prioritising local workers and suppliers, ensuring direct benefits to PNG communities.
This investment underscores Australia’s strong partnership with Papua New Guinea, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering economic growth and regional stability. By enhancing the efficiency and capacity of Kimbe Port, the project will play a vital role in facilitating trade, supporting businesses, and improving connectivity across PNG and the wider Pacific.
As a key player in this transformative infrastructure initiative, Pacific Marine Group continues to demonstrate its expertise and dedication to the region’s economic progress, reinforcing its role as a trusted partner in PNG’s development journey.
