Papua New Guinea airline PNG Air, achieved a major milestone in December 2024 by being awarded the Restructuring Airline of the Year Award. This accolade recognises the airline’s commendable turnaround, positioning it as a model for operational and financial restructuring within the aviation industry.
The transformation journey began in December 2023 when the National Court of Papua New Guinea approved PNG Air’s Creditor Scheme of Arrangement under Part XVI of the Companies Act 1997. This restructuring initiative was pivotal in addressing the airline’s financial challenges, ensuring its survival and sustainability amidst a highly competitive regional aviation market.
PNG Air operates a fleet of ATR 72-600 and Dash 8 aircraft, designed for efficient operations across Papua New Guinea’s rugged terrain and remote destinations. The airline serves over 25 domestic destinations, connecting major cities like Port Moresby, Lae, and Mount Hagen, as well as smaller, hard-to-reach communities. This extensive network is crucial for a nation where air travel is often the only viable mode of transportation due to its challenging geography.
Originally established in 1987 as Milne Bay Air, the airline rebranded to Airlines PNG in 2006 before becoming PNG Air in 2015. The rebranding marked a new chapter, with a focus on modernising its fleet and expanding its services to meet the growing demands of both passengers and cargo. Over the years, PNG Air has earned a reputation for reliability, particularly in servicing rural areas that play a vital role in the country’s economic and social fabric.
The award, presented by the International Airline Association for Business Excellence, acknowledged PNG Air’s innovative approach to financial restructuring and its significant contributions to the aviation sector in Papua New Guinea. It highlights the airline’s commitment to maintaining connectivity across the country’s diverse and often challenging geographical landscape.
PNG Air’s Managing Director, Stanley Stevens, expressed pride in the team’s collective effort to achieve this recognition. “This award is a testament to the resilience and dedication of our workforce. It marks a turning point for PNG Air as we continue to serve the nation with reliable and affordable air services,” he said.
Looking ahead, PNG Air plans to expand its regional network to include neighbouring Pacific nations, introduce more fuel-efficient aircraft, and enhance its digital services to improve customer experience. The airline also intends to explore strategic partnerships to strengthen its competitive position in the Pacific region.
As PNG’s aviation sector recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, PNG Air’s turnaround story serves as a shining example of resilience, innovation, and strategic planning. The airline’s achievements reaffirm its critical role in supporting Papua New Guinea’s connectivity, economic growth, and regional presence.
