PNG pushes agriculture transformation with AgriConnect, mass participation drive

Papua New Guinea is intensifying its focus on agriculture as a driver of economic growth, combining a major new programme with a call for mass participation in farming.

The government has launched the AgriConnect programme, a large-scale initiative aimed at transforming the agriculture sector through improved market access, financing and infrastructure support.

Valued at around US$250 million, the programme is designed to strengthen value chains and link farmers more effectively to domestic and international markets. It forms part of a broader strategy to diversify the economy away from heavy reliance on extractive industries.

Prime Minister James Marape has reinforced this direction by calling for one million farming families to actively contribute to the country’s economic future. The goal reflects an ambition to significantly expand agricultural production while improving rural incomes.

The combined approach highlights the government’s recognition that agriculture remains the backbone of livelihoods for a large portion of PNG’s population. Strengthening the sector is therefore seen as essential not only for growth, but also for social stability.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative but emphasise the need for consistent implementation, including investment in logistics, extension services and financing mechanisms.

If effectively executed, the programme could unlock substantial economic potential, positioning agriculture as a more significant contributor to exports and GDP.
