Papua New Guinea’s mineral exports reached a record K32 billion last year, highlighting the continued importance of the mining sector as the country prepares for a new wave of major resource developments.

Papua New Guinea’s mining industry achieved a new milestone in 2025, with mineral exports reaching a record K32 billion and reinforcing the sector’s position as one of the country’s principal economic drivers.

Mining Minister Solen Loifa announced the figure during PNG Resources Week, noting that strong international commodity prices and solid production from existing operations had contributed to the record performance.

The industry remains central to Papua New Guinea’s export earnings, government revenue and foreign exchange generation. Gold continues to dominate mineral exports, supported by copper, silver and other commodities produced by the country’s established mines.

The Minister also highlighted the growing contribution of the alluvial mining sector, which generated exports exceeding K1 billion during the year. The sector provides income for thousands of Papua New Guineans and plays an important role in many rural communities.

Attention is now turning to the next generation of large-scale mining projects expected to reshape the industry over the coming decade. Developments including Wafi-Golpu, Frieda River and the possible reopening of Panguna have the potential to attract billions of kina in investment while creating demand for engineering, construction, logistics and professional services.

The Government is seeking to ensure that future projects deliver greater benefits through local employment, procurement and business participation, while maintaining a regulatory environment capable of attracting international investment.

Industry representatives say the combination of established operations, emerging projects and favourable long-term demand for copper and gold positions Papua New Guinea strongly in global mining markets.

For Australian companies supplying equipment, technical services, consulting, finance and environmental expertise, the sector continues to offer substantial commercial opportunities. Many Australian firms already have long-standing relationships with PNG mining operations and are expected to play an important role as new projects move towards development.

The record export performance provides further evidence that mining will remain a cornerstone of Papua New Guinea’s economic growth strategy for many years to come.
