National Banking Corporation is pursuing an initial public offering on PNGX in late 2027 after raising more than K200 million from PNG investors and expanding its nationwide commercial banking operations.
Papua New Guinea’s National Banking Corporation is working towards an initial public offering on PNGX, potentially adding another locally owned financial institution to the country’s national stock exchange.
State Enterprises Minister William Duma said NBC remained on track to pursue an IPO in the final quarter of 2027.
The announcement came during the opening of NBC’s commercial centre at Waigani in Port Moresby as the bank continues to expand its services and branch network.
NBC is Papua New Guinea’s seventh fully licensed commercial bank and currently operates 11 branches across the country’s four regions, with further expansion planned.
Duma said the bank had successfully completed a capital raising that secured more than K200 million from investors in Papua New Guinea. He described the result as evidence of investor confidence in the institution and in the prospects for a domestically owned commercial bank.
A successful PNGX flotation would give a wider group of Papua New Guinean investors the opportunity to hold equity in NBC and would also broaden the range of financial-sector companies available on the domestic share market.
The proposed listing comes at a time of continuing change in Papua New Guinea’s banking industry, including increased competition, growth in digital financial services and efforts by the Bank of Papua New Guinea to expand financial inclusion.
NBC traces its origins to the former People’s Micro Bank and has progressively transformed its operating model as it moves into mainstream commercial banking.
For PNGX, another substantial locally based listing would also support efforts to deepen the domestic capital market and increase investment opportunities for institutions, superannuation funds and individual investors.
The IPO is still more than a year away and will depend on the required regulatory, financial and market processes being completed.
However, NBC’s K200 million capital raising and continuing branch expansion provide an indication of the scale of its ambitions as it positions itself as a larger competitor in PNG’s banking market and prepares for potential public ownership through PNGX.
