The President, Executive Committee and members of the Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council are deeply saddened at the passing of the Right Honourable Sir Mekere Morauta KCMG in Brisbane on 19 December 2020.
Sir Mekere spent his lifetime in leadership positions contributing to the economic and social growth of Papua New Guineans. He was one of a small group of notable young Papua New Guinean government officials who helped steer Papua New Guinea into its Independence and later rose to prominence in public life. He was Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 1999 to 2002.
Sir Mekere was one of Papua New Guinea’s most effective Prime Ministers introducing wide ranging reforms to the banking and superannuation sectors which have contributed hugely to Papua New Guinea’s economic growth and to the lives of Papua New Guineans. He was highly respected internationally and contributed greatly to policy debate in the Pacific region especially with the Pacific Islands Forum members. He was appointed in 2013 as the eminent person to lead the major review of the Pacific Islands Forum’s benchmark Pacific Plan for Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Integration.
Sir Mekere’s leadership and influence of good in public life will be sadly missed in Papua New Guinea.
The Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council sends its deepest condolences to Lady Roslyn Morauta and their son James.
